Information about sugar beet:
Sugar beet is grown in Finland for sugar production. It is grown in southern and central Finland.
Sugar beet is a biennial crop. In its first year it produces a large number of leaves and a main root, which it uses to harvest sugar (in sugar beet plantations the crop is harvested in the first year). The following year, the beet produces flowers and seeds (using the sugar stored in the root). There are different varieties of sugar beet. It weighs about 0.5-1kg when lifted from the ground.
Sugar beet thrives in sandy soil. It makes efficient use of the nutrients in the soil thanks to its long roots.
Sucros, Finland's only beet sugar processing plant, is located in Säkylä.
What is processed from sugar beet?
Mainly sugar.
Ps. About 14 sugar beet are used for one kilo of Finnish Taloussokeri (however, Finland's own production is not enough to produce all the sugar used in Finland, so sugar beet and sugar cane are also imported from abroad).
Beet pulp and molasses are by-products of sugar production. They are used as a source of fibre or energy in animal feed.Betaine is also obtained as a by-product of sugar production.
